How much does a custom marble table cost
In short. A 240 cm marble table costs in the region of €3,800. But a custom marble table has no price list: the price depends on size and finish together, and smaller does not automatically mean cheaper. And the item nobody talks about is not the stone — it is the trading chain between the quarry and your home. A retailer typically adds 35 to 50 per cent on top of the manufacturer’s price, and if the manufacturer imports the stone directly you save roughly a further 20 per cent.
The five items that make the price
1. The stone. The widest variable, and it does not vary by half: it varies tenfold. A standard Carrara white and a backlit onyx are not in the same conversation. Before discussing sizes, you choose the material bracket.
2. Thickness and span. A long, thin top with no intermediate support is not the same as a short, thick one. Beyond a certain span the top has to be stiffened or reinforced, and that is labour, not material.
3. The edge. A straight polished edge is quick. A radiused edge on a curved front, or a forty-five degree mitre that hides the thickness, is hours of machining and hand finishing.
4. The base. Metal, wood or stone: the base can cost as much as the top, and on a marble table it is never a detail, because it has to carry and distribute a serious weight.
5. Shipping and installation. A hundred and eighty kilo top is not something a courier unloads. Custom crating, the right vehicle, two people to place it: real costs, better seen in the quote than discovered on delivery day.
Why two quotes for the same table differ by half
Because you are almost never comparing the same work, and almost never buying from the same distance.
On the usual route, between the mountain and your home you find an importer, a distributor, a retailer and often a third-party workshop doing the cutting. Each takes their share. A retailer's mark-up on the manufacturer's price is typically between 35 and 50 per cent.
Then there is a second step few people see: if the manufacturer imports the stone directly rather than buying from an importer, you save roughly a further 20 per cent on the material. Those two margins stack, and on a significant table they move the number far more than any haggling over the final price.
So if the goal is the best price for the same work, go to whoever actually makes the product. It is not about discounts: it is about how many hands are in between.
A reference figure, and why it is not enough
To give an order of magnitude: a 240 cm marble table costs in the region of €3,800. That is an honest reference point, not a price list, and it tells you the bracket you are working in.
The point is that smaller does not automatically mean cheaper. Price is not calculated by the square metre: it depends on size and finish together, on how the piece is taken out of the block, on how much material is left unusable around it, on the veining that has to be matched. A shorter table with more demanding machining can cost as much as a larger, simpler one.
So there is only one sensible piece of advice: do not be dazzled by figures — start from a drawing, or even just an idea, and ask for it to be quoted. One number for your piece is worth more than ten generic price brackets read online.
What to ask so two quotes are really comparable
- The exact name and origin of the stone, not just "white marble": two whites can differ threefold.
- The real thickness of the top, and whether it is solid or edge-built.
- Edge profile and surface finish: polished, honed or bush-hammered.
- Who does the machining: the supplier, or a third-party workshop.
- Whether shipping, crating and placement are included.
- Lead times, in writing.
With those six answers, two quotes become comparable. Without them, you are comparing two numbers that mean nothing.
How we work
We choose the block at the quarry face and machine it in our own workshop in Cantù, Brianza. Between the stone and your table there is no importer, distributor, retailer and third-party workshop: there is our manufacture. It is not a promotion, it is how the company is built, and that is why it does not change from one quote to the next.
Send us a drawing, a sketch, or simply the sizes and the idea: the quote comes back within 48 hours.
The figure and the percentages given are orders of magnitude in the natural stone market and are here to show how a price is built up: every project is quoted on its material, machining and quantities.
